“Hānau hou” (Reborn) Tables
by Greg Maxson
Greg Maxson combines master craftsmanship and fine art to give new life to wood that would have otherwise been destroyed.
In 2018, Greg’s love for Hawaii and Hawaiian hardwoods led him to discover Kamuela Hardwoods on the Big Island. Kamuela Hardwoods is a lumber company that takes pride in reclaiming, recovering, and salvaging wood that would otherwise have been burned, chipped, or thrown in landfills. In doing so, they turn underappreciated materials into high quality lumber for users in the Hawaiian Islands and elsewhere.
Each finished piece of art begins with Greg selecting wood with which he feels a particular affinity at the Kamuela Hardwood lumberyard. Once the wood is shipped to Greg’s shop in Palm Desert, CA, he spends weeks with each piece, taking the wood through the many steps on its journey to being “reborn,” bringing its own unique character to back to life.
